On episode 174 of Nerd’s RPG Variety Cast I talk about a recent game of Against the Darkmaster using the Owlbear Rodeo Virtual Tabletop. Here are some screenshots from that session.

This first screen shot is of the walled village the player characters were in when it was attacked. You can see two house already on fire.

Here is a closer shot of some tokens, the faded out one is a deceased attacker.

Here you can see the dice roller, the results are shown under the player name (there is also an option to keep them secret)

You can even do fog of war!

Colin Green over at the Spikepit RPG Podcast asked me if page count was a fair measure of rules complexity on Episode 172 of my podcast. My roundabout answer resulted in this contest.

Here is the challenge: send me an audio message defining Rules Heavy, Rules Light, and Crunchy as they refer to RPGs. You can not use the other terms in a definition (No ‘rules light games are those that aren’t rules heavy’) and you can not just give a game as an example (‘RISUS is rules light’).

You can submit your definitions using the voice message feature on Anchor or you can send me an email (nerdsrpgvarietycast ‘at’ gmail ‘dot’ com) and attach a voice file. I will put all the submissions in a hat and randomly select a winner who will receive a $20 DrivethruRPG gift certificate. All submissions are due by St. Patrick’s Day, 17 March 2021.

Enter the blog!

This blog is mainly a companion to my podcast but occasionally I’ll post stand alone entries like this one!

With ZineQuest3 over at Kickstarter rounding down I wanted to post the projects that I am backing that you still have time to back!

ZineQuest 3: Explore Dungeons Zine #2 A system neutral RPG zine, jam packed full of cool stuff! New monsters, magic, maps, adventures, random tables, and art!!

I am backing this to get print copies of zines 1 & 2 !

Horrors of the Sepulchre [Zine Quest] An old-school horror themed deathtrap dungeon zine adventure.

Harsch Table, Volume 1 A B&W zine collecting brand new random generation tables to bring excitement, mystery, and danger to your RPG sessions #ZineQuest3

Marching Order – A Solo or Co-op Dark Dungeon Delving Zine Play a backstabbing Rogue in this gritty Old School inspired dark dungeon delve of tactics, chaos, and coin.

You can hear an interview with the creator on the Thought Eater podcast Episode # 179

THOUGHT EATER: Humpday RPG Show 2.3.21 (frothsofdnd.blogspot.com)

Ninja City: A DCC RPG Zine A role playing game tribute the 1980’s Ninja explosion, built upon Dungeon Crawl Classics rules.

Peanut butter and chocolate have nothing on Ninjas and DCC! Possibly my most anticipated zine.

BLACKOUT in Crater Valley: a VHS era Slasher RPG A unique Zinequest RPG adventure set in a small town in the 1980s inspired by VHS era Slasher Films for DCC and old school rpg systems!

The Barrier & the Sound ZineQuest 1-bit solo thriller TRPG of surreal coastal weirdness

I managed to get a print copy of this but would still back at the PDF level it I hadn’t managed to score that sweet physical copy!

SIEGE: Pocket Warfare A modular battle-defense system to fuse with your RPGs.

Wizard Funk 3 Wizard Funk 3: a zine about Old School D&D

Courier – a solo RPG zine Deliver packages across a dangerous landscape while building your reputation and becoming a legend.

I went big on this one and backed for the collector’s edition where I get the zine, a custom storage envelope, bonus printed materials including tables, stickers, and more!

Hardboiled: A Private Eye Roleplaying Game A Hardboiled Detective RPG zine

How could I resist?

Macabre – Volume I [ZineQuest] A horror zine for the Dungeon Crawl Classics Roleplaying Game.

Outlaws ‘N’ Owlbears A zine sized RPG set in a fantasy west.

I think this is the third Western themed zine I backed this month…

Grogzilla #2 – Son of Grogzilla! A TTRPG zine from D101 Games for ZineQuest 3

I am a big fan of Newt Newport and his products from D101 Games so this was a no brainer!

STREETS – Stray animal adventures! A tabletop role-playing game about stray dogs and cats.

Keep Up the Fire! Deluxe Edition A refreshed deluxe version of KEEP OF THE FIRE! Solitaire game by John Welch on the Boxer Rebellion 1900. Plays in 45 minutes.

Old School Wargames is the ‘grognard wing’ of Worthington Publishing. I have a number of Worthington’s games and they are top notch.

Zombicide: Undead or Alive The hit board game is back, reinvented in a western setting! Streamlined rules, different classes, new survivors, and zombies!

The original Zombicide was one of those games that shot up in value after the Kickstarter, I sold my copy for something like $800 profit! The games are OK, not spectacular but I am intrigued by the Western theme and chance to pick up a bunch of Western themed minis.

Tiny Epic Dungeons A quick playing cooperative dungeon crawler for 1 to 4 players, featuring a modular dungeon, epic boss battles and detailed miniatures!

Gamelyn Games has been putting out the ‘Tiny Epic’ game series for a while and while some are better than others I think they all offer a pretty good band for the buck.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns – The Game You are Batman coming out of retirement in the board game that brings Frank Miller’s iconic comic series to life!

A solo Dark Knight Returns game?! Insert the Fry take my money meme here!
